Allianz Cumann na mBunscol: Scartaglin Girls and Currow Boys victorious in Castleisland District Mini Sevens Finals

The Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Castleisland District Mini Sevens Finals were played in Castleisland Desmonds pitch in glorious sunshine on Thursday March 28th.Ten boys’ teams and eleven girls’ teams participated in this competition with the prize being a place in the county finals for the winners. The games were played in a very sporting manner with high levels of skill on display. The competition was keen throughout the day with all teams doing their utmost to get to the final in the afternoon. 

In the boys’ competition Gaeilscoil Aogáin defeated Kilmurry in the first semi final with Currow faring best against O’Brennan in the other one. The final was a cracking game of football with Currow powering into an early lead scoring three first half goals and a point. Gaelscoil cut the deficit before the interval with a goal from Isac Brosnan. In the 2nd half Gaelscoil Aogáin really got to grips with the game and bravely fought back scoring two goals through Cillian Dennehy and Pat Brosnan. But Currow with great displays from Owen O’Connor, David Healy and Ruairí Brosnan kept their composure and tacked on two points to win by three in the end. Final Score: Currow: 3-03; Gaelscoil Aogáin: 3-00. Allianz Cumann na mBunscol mini sevens co-ordinator Joanne Brosnan presented the plaque to the Currow captain Owen O’Connor.

In the girls’ competition Scartaglin defeated Nohoval in the semi final and Kilmurry were too strong for O’Brennan. Last year’s winners Scartaglin made the better start against Kilmurry in the final scoring 1-02 in the first half with Kilmurry scoring a point. In the 2nd half Kilmurry had most of the play but found it very difficult to penetrate the Scartaglin defence where Tara Keirn and Laura McShane were excellent as was Mollie O’Mahony at midfield. Ellie Mai Walsh and Amelie Kerin played their hearts out for Kilmurry but the stronger Scartaglin side won out in the end. Final score: Scartaglin: 2-03; Kilmurry: 0-03. Mini sevens co-ordinator for Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Joanne Brosnan presented the shield to Scartagiln’s captain Mollie O’Mahony . Both Scartaglin Girls and Currow Boys will now go forward to the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol County Mini Sevens Finals in Austin Stack Park next week.
