Scartaglin National School were crowned the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol GAA INTO Mini Sevens Ladies Football County Champions defeating neighbours Kilmurry National School.
These two teams actually met in the Castleisland District Mini Sevens Finals two weeks previously from which Scartaglin emerged victorious and so booked their place in the County finals. Kilmurry as runners up went through a preliminary round of three further games and came out on top, thus ensuring them a place in the finals also. Ten girls’ teams from around the county competed on that final day with some epic encounters taking place over a five hour period.
Kilmurry defeated St Brigid’s Duagh, Baile an Fheirtearaigh/Ceann Trá, Kilgarvan , Faha NS and Gleann na gCoileach othier way to the final.
While Scartaglin dismissed Scoil Eoin, Baloonagh, St. Teresa’s Kilflynn, Gleann na gCoileach Waterville and Faha to meet their fellow district school in the final.
And what a final it was, a repeat of the Castleisland District final between these two neighbouring sides: Kilmurry and Scartaglin. The first half was very evenly contested with only a point separating the sides at the break. Scartaglin: 0-02; Kilmurry: 0-01. Scartaglin tacked on two further points in the second half through their scorer in chief Maggie Riordan and had victoryalmost in their sights. But Kilmurry were not finished yet. The girls put a great move together which was finished to the net by the impressive Caitlín Griffin to level the game. Kilmurry were awarded a 20 metre in the final seconds of normal time and could have snatched victory but it went agonisingly wide and so the game went to extra time. This would be an up-hill battle for Kilmurry as they unfortunately they lost Amelia Kerin and Áine Walsh to hand injuries and this was a huge blow. On the other hand would Scartaglin tire having already played injury time in the previous game. But Ruby Horgan scored an early goal for them followed by points from Maggie Riordan and the very impressive and tenacious defender Katie Kerins to seal a second Allianz Cumann na mBunscol GAA INTO Mini Sevens title in a row for these hard working Scartaglin girls.
Chairperson of Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Chiarraí Tomás O hAiniféin presented the plaque to Scartaglin joint captains Katie Kerins and Shauna McCarthy. Great credit is due to these two teams from the Castleisland District for serving up such an epic and entertaining final and to their respective managers Joanne Brosnan of Kilmurry and Eileen Fitzpatrick of Scartaglin for the work they do in their schools to promote gaelic football.
