The Great Killarney Duck Race sees a return to a traditional form of fund raising by Kilcummin NS Parents Association.
The event, which will be run on the 14th of June at 6.30pm in the Deenagh River, Port Road, Killarney (Starting at the playground bridge), is being organised to raise financial resources that will assist the school and its pupils by enhancing existing facilities and help with the purchase of new equipment for the school.
“We were looking for a fun family event that everyone could enter and enjoy to finish off the school year” Derek O Leary, Chairperson of the Kilcummin NS Parents Association told the Killarney Outlook,
“We are delighted to have a one night family break in Kilkenny as the first prize and we will have some more family orientated prizes for the second and third place ducks. With the price to adopt a duck only €5, its a great chance to win a great prize. We’ll have a best dressed duck costume prize for someone who makes the effort to go a bit quackers on the evening of the race”, he added.
Derek was also encouraging everyone to cheer on there adopted racing ducks – “Its also such a good setting to run the race with clear views of the river on both banks of the river, so no excuse for not coming out to cheer on your duck”
The group are expecting to sell in the region of 300 ducks for this event and they can be purchased in Kilcummin Post Office and the Dungeon Bookshop in Killarney. They will also have a “Pop Up Shop” at the Market Cross on Saturday 8th June from 2pm – 4pm. Ducks can also be bought from 5.30pm – 6.30pm on the evening of the race.
The race starts from the bridge at the playground on Port Road, across from the Cathedral with the finish line at the bridge and main entrance to Deenagh Lodge and the Demesne. Its sure to be a quacking event!
