The Flag is awarded to schools who strive to achieve a physical educated and physically active school community.Much hard work went into this achievement under the leadership of Ms. O’ Leary, Ms. Sweeney, Michelle and the Active Schools Committee. They worked with the staff and children of the school to ensure we taught a broad and balanced PE curriculum and helped us plan, implement and monitor improvements in PE and physical activity.
While Gary O’Sullivan puts up the Green Flag for Curranes National School
Special Olympian Gary O’Sullivan was on hand to raise the Green Flag at Curranes NS on Tuesday morning.
The flag which is awarded by An Taisce is a recognition of the local Schools efforts in litter and waste management.
Eight pupils at the school made up the Green School Committee. There was a committee member from each class. These pupils met with Ms. Nelligan on a regular basis to discuss issues in relation to litter & waste management at the school. These pupils conveyed messages from these meetings to the pupils in their classes.
Litter bins, paper towel bins & compost bins were weighed at the school on a regular basis. The pupils monitored & compared the weight of each of the bin types over a period of time, ensuring that waste was kept to a minimum at the school.
Representatives from KWD recycling visited the school & gave a presentation to pupils on the topics of litter, waste & recycling.
The pupils participated in the Kerry County Clean Up in the Laccabawn area.
The pupils participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The school’s theme was “Green School.” The pupils marched through the town, chanting their slogan “We reuse, we are clean, we don’t waste, we are green. Scoil Íde Curranes is the best recycling team.”
